What to Expect on Your Gorilla Trekking Day
Preparation
To join the trek, a pair of sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes suitable for navigating the forest terrain, which can be muddy and slippery, is required.
Arrival & Briefing
Arrive at the park headquarters by 7:00 am to complete your registration and receive a briefing from the park rangers. This briefing will cover important information about the gorillas, trekking guidelines, and conservation efforts. Once paperwork and preparations are complete, you’ll be assigned to a gorilla family group and set off on your trek with your guides and rangers.
Gorilla Encounter
Upon reaching the gorillas, you’ll have up to one hour to observe and photograph these gentle giants. Witness their unique behaviors, from grooming to playing and communicating with each other, gaining a rare glimpse into the lives of these endangered creatures. This encounter is both humbling and inspiring, offering a deep connection with nature.
Early Morning Departure
Your day begins with an early departure from Kigali around 4:30 - 4:45 am for the 2.5-hour drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. To ensure a smooth experience, we handle all transportation in a comfortable 4WD vehicle with an experienced driver-guide.
The Trek Experience
Accompanied by experienced park guides and rangers, you’ll enter the volcanic forest and begin your journey to find the mountain gorillas. As you trek through the lush vegetation, you may encounter other wildlife and a stunning diversity of flora, adding to the beauty of the experience. The trek duration varies based on the location of your assigned gorilla family, but it typically lasts around 3 hours.
Return to Kigali
After the trek, you’ll enjoy a well-deserved lunch and a chance to reflect on the experience before your scenic drive back to Kigali.
